Description
After a 24-year hiatus, Chevrolet officially brought back the “SS” moniker for the Camaro in the midst of the production run for the fourth generation. Starting with a standard Z28 powered by the 5.7-liter LT1 engine, a functioning hood scoop was added along with a high-flow air intake, the sway bars were upgraded to larger units and special aluminum alloy wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Comp T/A tires were used to increase performance. To help with production, Chevrolet contracted Street Legal Performance, better known as SLP, to modify the stock Z28s into full-blown SS cars. With the goal of taking down the Mustang in both GT and Cobra variants, SLP offered additional performance upgrades, like high-flow exhaust systems and Hurst shifters, that could be purchased and installed before taking delivery from the selling dealer. This particular 1997 Camaro is one of 3,038 SS models produced, of which only 734 were black. It features the standard SS LT1 engine, but has numerous optional upgrades, including performance exhaust, Hurst performance shifter, oil cooler package and more. The engine is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission, sending power to the optional Torsen Torque-Sensing limited-slip rear differential. From new, the car has covered just 20,880 miles, supported by a clean CARFAX, and is still in like-new condition. It comes with loads of documentation, like the original Window Sticker and sales addendum, owner’s manuals, warranty info, courtesy key, a second set of keys and a wheel lock key. With low miles, excellent documentation and a list of performance upgrades, this Camaro SS is a great candidate for any Camaro collector
