Description
Throughout the muscle-car wars of the ’60s and early ’70s, Oldsmobile wasn’t content to sit back and let division rivals Pontiac and Chevrolet dominate the buyer market. In 1964, they took the standard Cutlass and equipped it with a V8 engine, 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed transmission and dual exhaust – and the 442 was born. Oldsmobile took the higher-end approach, targeting the upscale buyer with more features, luxury and comfort than the bare-bones, no-frills performance offered in rival muscle cars. By 1970, the model had seen several tweaks, but was at peak performance with a standard 455ci engine. For buyers wanting even more, the W30 package was available, which included a more powerful engine, performance suspension and disc brakes. A fiberglass hood with dual scoops and special W30 badging was also added to give the cars a look to match the performance. This Oldsmobile started life as a Cutlass S convertible, but has undergone a highly detailed transformation to a W30-optioned 442. It features a correct W30 “F-code” 455 big block backed by an automatic transmission. Sitting atop the engine is the correct air induction/cleaner setup to make use of the functional scoops on the fiberglass hood. The entire engine bay has been brought to W30 specifications as well, with the correct color wheel wells, stickers and hardware. Additionally it is equipped with front power disc brakes, as well as front and rear sway bars. The outside has been finished in Twilight Blue Metallic accented by white stripes and white interior, giving the car a very striking presence. The white power convertible top goes up and down with ease, and a modern stereo hidden in the glovebox provides added driving enjoyment. With real W30 convertibles fetching well into the six figures, this re-creation offers the same great driving experience and looks at a fraction of the price.
