Description
SALE PENDINGOften credited as the first true muscle car, the GTO is one of the most popular models Pontiac made in the 1960s. Introduced initially as an performance option package for the Tempest, the popularity and sales success eventually led to it becoming a stand-alone model after the first two years of production. When it was first introduced, Pontiac offered a 389ci engine with either a 4-barrel Carter carburetor or the more upgraded 'Tri-Power' setup featuring three 3-barrel Rochester carburetors. Heading into 1965, engineers tweaked the engines to increase power outputs; the standard 4-barrel was increased to 335hp and the Tri-Power was rated at 360hp. They also added some styling changes, like a simulated hood scoop and a new 'egg crate' style grille. All of these tweaks were enough to more than double sales from the previous year.Looking at this particular example of a 1965 GTO, it's easy to see why it was such a success. It features a glassy smooth black exterior, with matching interior and convertible top. Powering it is a WT-code 389ci V8 backed by a 4-speed manual transmission. The engine bay is nicely detailed, utilizing original spec components and hardware to give everything a nice, factory-correct look. The car comes with various pieces of documentation as well, including the original Protect-O-Plate and service book, owner's manual and PHS documents.
